Director
Léo Brunel
Two expert mountain rescuers struggle to descend in this award-winning short film.
In this delightful comedy of errors, even the most seasoned explorers are no match for the power of nature.
True to Léo’s signature comedic sensibilities, the humor lies in the quiet, sparseness, and perfect timing that gives each twist the space it needs for major impact. The multitude of possibilities of hilarious mishaps on the mountain were whittled down to the very best jokes and moments that served the story’s arc. In addition to the expansive brainstorming of comedic moments, the team also developed entire backstories and personalities for our two intrepid heroes, giving them individuality and realism.
The film is a perfect encapsulation of Léo Brunel’s mastery of grounded absurdism and pushing expectations just over the edge into something completely new and extremely funny.
Hors-Piste has won over 46 international awards, including the BAFTA Student Award for Best Animated Short, an Annie Award nomination and an Oscar shortlist.
